Its extensive track record as a therapy is a testament to its success as a spider vein removal treatment. While technology has improved and therapeutic agents have advanced over the years, vein sclerotherapy has many benefits as well as some potential drawbacks. Knowing your particular situation can help determine the best outcome and our board-certified vascular doctors are happy to discuss this with you. While there aren’t necessarily significant risks to sclerotherapy, there are certain things to be prepared for so you can better understand the permanence of this treatment option. The following are some of the top things to know: **Multiple Treatment Sessions** Most patients only require one sclerotherapy treatment session to reduce or eliminate problem veins. However, depending on the severity, and patient preference, some may need more. Some veins are just stubborn and need to be reinjected before they disappear. **Side Effects** Most patients report feeling little discomfort as a [sclerotherapy side effect](https://health.veininstitutenj.com/blog/are-there-side-effects-from-sclerotherapy) - the most common complaint is some mild itching on the evening of the injections. Others experience a slight burning sensation immediately after the sclerotherapy injection—this is rare and almost always relieved by an over-the-counter pain reliever. **Post Treatment** You must wear [compression stockings](https://health.veininstitutenj.com/blog/benefits-of-compression-therapy) or compression bandages for a short while following sclerotherapy to achieve the best result. Few people complain about the injections; however, most people do not enjoy the stockings! You may engage in vigorous physical activity immediately but you will need to wear the stockings! You will be encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure. **Allergies** Allergic reactions to the chemical used in the procedures are extremely rare . Make sure you discuss any allergies with our doctors during the consult. **Bruising, Blistering, and More** Bruising around the treatment area and trapped blood at the injection site occasionally develop, which usually fade shortly after treatment. A slight blistering of the surrounding tissue can also occur. A small percentage of sclerotherapy patients develop a network of tiny pink vessels called “matte telangiectasias” which usually resolves without treatment. The clinical reality is that the overwhelming majority of patients who have sclerotherapy have very positive outcomes and do find that sclerotherapy can have lasting effects.
