Keep Your Veins Healthy While Working from Home

Do you love working from home? Of course, you do. It's a familiar atmosphere, no commuting, free lunch, paycheck's on time. Life is as good as it can possibly be for you right now, right? Even if you're working from home, for safety precautions. It's essential that you do not overlook your health, especially your vein health. Yes, vein health matters, and it's crucial that you keep them healthy.

While working from home has become the norm for most office workers, being sequestered at home, for one reason or another, has pretty much become the norm globally, courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic.

About Vein Health

Do you know the importance of your veins and why you need to keep them healthy? If so, have you ever wondered why you never have to schedule an annual vein physical?

Veins can be impacted by many conditions, including:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

Veins behave equally to a return freeway system, carrying blood back to your heart. Genetics and other issues may predispose you to issues with your vein health. Some issues include:

  • Varicose veins – Where valves in the blood vessels may not close properly, allowing blood to collect, and
  • Spider veins - Basically tiny, baby varicose veins that are so small they don't cause much blood collection or pain, though their appearance can impact your self-confidence.

Studies have also been able to link sitting for long periods of time to chronic conditions like heart and vein disease, as well as orthopedic problems. Regular exercise can prevent the negative impacts of inertia.  Consider these beneficial tips from the team at the Vein Institute of NJ at The Cardiovascular Care Group to ensure the health of your veins.

1. You're in Control of Your Health

Luckily, working from home doesn't mean you have to overlook your health, as nonperformance is not okay. If your routine was working out in the gym before heading into the office, you can still do that, minus the traffic.

Consider this: Rather than just sitting in your home office all day, move around, stretch, go on a short walk through nature on your break. Your body can avert the negative effects of sitting for hours when you mobilize it.

2. Activity Matters

Most people sit far longer during the day than they stand, naturally; unless you work in security or retail, where movement is constant.

Consider this: Take regular breaks while telecommuting to keep the blood flowing, and to strengthen your veins. You can:

  • Stretch your arms, stomach, and back
  • Use an elliptical machine or stationary bike
  • Go for a jog or walk through nature on your break
  • Stretch your thighs and calf muscles to boost blood flow
  • Zoom meetings - point your toes upwards, then straight out

Taking these simple steps can prevent blood from pooling in your leg veins and help the flow of blood towards your heart. Additionally, while working from home, you should elevate your uncrossed legs or use a footstool to raise your feet. Also, for an extra boost of circulation,  periodically raise your feet above hip level.

3. Compression Works

Are you predisposed to venous insufficiency? Either by:

  • Obesity
  • Genetics
  • Pregnancy
  • Heart disease
  • Work/lifestyle habits

Consider this: Whether you're predisposed or not, if you're working from home, you should wear compression socks

4. Clothing Should Not Be Constrictive

Constrictive clothing can stymie circulation.

Consider this: Dress comfortably in airy, breathable clothing that won't restrict or jeopardize your vein health.

5. Eat Healthy

So they say, you are what you eat. And since it's so easy to snack at home, you want to be mindful of what you eat.

Consider this: When you must munch, snack on fruits and veggies for better circulation and more energy. Processed and sugary foods can exacerbate vein health issues and affect blood pressure.

6. Consume Water Frequently

Staying hydrated by drinking water regularly is essential in the circulation of blood flowing through your veins. Dehydration can cause poor circulation due to constriction and shrinkage of your veins.

Consider this: Instead of reaching for that soda or extra coffee, avoid the caffeine and grab some water or herbal tea.

Don't Ignore Subtle Warning Signs

If you notice your legs and veins look or feel different, even slightly, you should see a medical professional sooner rather than later. Delays only make issues worse.

If you allow subtle vein issues to go untreated, it can affect your heart due to poor circulation, constriction, and blood clots.

Self Care - Mind and Balance

Self-care is about protecting your mind and body. When you continue to be positive and productive; even during stressful times, you're able to overcome challenges. Movement will play a big role in keeping you flexible and comfy, which helps with mindfulness and balance.
